May 18 Third Saturday Birding

People gathered at 8:00am in the parking lot near the Skinner Butte Park – RiverPlay Discovery Village Playground on Cheshire Ave. Eugene, OR 97401. The walk was 2 -2 ½ miles long with hiking up the butte and returning down to the parking lot, on dirt, gravel and paved trails.

The 3rd Saturday Bird Walk on May 18 was at Skinner Butte Park and led by Rachael Friese. Two Red-breasted Sapsuckers were seen in the RiverPlay parking lot where we met, one drumming on a metal sign. Our group of 26 began up the road to the summit. Northern Flickers called from upslope. California Scrub Jays were viewed near the columns. Wilson’s Warblers and a Yellow Warbler sang from concealed locations in the shrubbery. Our group spread out on the mid-elevation trail on the south meadow. Many saw a pair of Lazuli Buntings in the tall grass. Lesser Goldfinch were seen and heard. Western Tanagers called from the treetops but stayed hidden from view. A Western Wood-Pewee on the edge of the East meadow provided scope views for the group. Cedar Waxwings flew in flocks across the summit. It was a beautiful morning! Thank you, Rachael for sharing your time and expertise.
