Coyote Creek ODFW and City of Eugene Walk March 18th at 9am

Visit three Coyote Creek properties with Chris Vogel, Restoration & Monitoring Biologist, Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife, and Paul Gordon, Ecological Services Technical Specialist, City of Eugene Parks and Open Space.

Chris and Paul will lead an hour-long walk so interested persons can learn about their projects and see the properties on March 18^th at 9 am. Numbers will be limited (another visit will be set up to accommodate an overflow crowd.)

Since 2013, the Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) has purchased 534 acres adjacent to Fern Ridge Wildlife Area.  The two sites, Coyote Creek South and Coyote Creek Northeast, were purchased through the Willamette Wildlife Mitigation Program (WWMP). The funding was provided by Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) through a fifteen year agreement between ODFW and BPA to settle federal wildlife habitat mitigation obligations in the Willamette Valley.  The overarching goals of the sites are to restore wet prairie habitats and protect and improve the riparian corridor of Coyote Creek.  Once completed, nearly 440 acres will be restored to native habitats.  Restoration of the wet prairie would benefit the following species: Nelson’s Checkermallow, Red-legged Frog, Western Meadowlark, Vesper Sparrow, and Streaked Horned-lark. 

Since 2006, the City of Eugene’s 240-acre Coyote Prairie wetland mitigation site has been restored to native prairie in phases with success in creating thriving habitat diversity.
