Bird Day: A Story of 24 Hours and 24 Avian Lives by Mark E Hauber

October 24, 2024 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Book Club: Bird Day: A Story of 24 Hours and 24 Avian Lives by Mark E Hauber

From morning to night and from the Antarctic to the equator, birds have busy days. In this short book, ornithologist Mark E. Hauber reveals how birds spend their time, covering twenty-four different species across the globe. We meet owls and nightjars hunting at night, and kiwis and petrels navigating the dark. As the sun rises, we enjoy the “dawn chorus,” and at eleven o’clock, we observe a common pochard resting with one eye open to avoid predators. By eight that evening, we watch a hawk swallowing bats whole, gorging on up to fifteen in rapid succession.

Each chapter features stunning illustrations by award-winning artist Tony Angell, capturing these unique moments in time. Hauber and Angell’s collaboration creates an engaging read that’s perfect for anyone looking to spend an hour or two—it’s a true gift for readers, amateur scientists, and birdwatchers.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to engage with Mark and fellow bird enthusiasts. Please RSVP via the Zoom link provided to confirm your attendance.

Thank you for being a part of the Bird Book Club. We look forward to seeing you!

Program Meetings

Our monthly program meetings have something for everyone. During the last year we hosted programs by naturalists, wildlife artists and expert birders on a variety of topics from the birds of Hawaii, to ravens, wolves, and people, to the migration of red knots. Participating in a program meeting is a fun way to get involved with Lane County Audubon. Meetings are free and open to all.

We are currently meeting on Zoom and in-person as conditions allow on the 4th Tuesday of each month between September and May at 7:00 p.m.
