Our 3rd Saturday walk took place at the UO Natural Areas. Our walk was co-led…

Our November Third Saturday outing on 11/16 led by Vjera Thompson began at the Mill Race Path-Booth Kelly Trailhead on a cold, cloudy morning. Our group of 23 crossed the small bridge where Mallards and Green-winged Teal floated in the water below.A Belted Kingfisher rattled as it flew near the ponds. Vera showed us a beaver dam, lodge, and a tree with recent beaver cuts. As we paused on the trail an amazing thing happened. We heard a bark followed by a few yips and howls from the hillside. Coyotes! The yips and howls were answered by one or two additional packs of coyotes in an eerily beautiful chorus. We stood there amazed and smiling until the last coyote calls faded to silence. We also saw plenty of birds. Our complete bird list follows.
Thank you to Vjera for her expertise and continued support of the 3rd Saturday Walks.
